After

Remarks. This university, which formerly had Colleges of Medicine, Arts, Agriculture, Engineering and Science now possesses only the first three. It was founded by American missionaries as the Canton Christian College in 1893 and handed over to Chinese administrative control in 1927.

the fall of Canton it removed to Hong Kong and was housed by the Hong Kong University. During this period the standard actually rose and Lingnan certainly ranked as one of the best universities in China. After the fall of Hong Kong, however, it lost almost its entire library and equipment and two colleges had to be closed down. An attempt is now being made

to restart the Science College.

The staff includes several returned students from England but American influence is naturally very strong. classes are conducted in English except Chinese language classes.

All

The students are keen on social activities of all kinds, especially music. They showed great interest in Sino-British cultural relations and called a meeting during which they gave me their ideas on the subject. The suggestions made were similar to those of the professors.

The buildings are of mud and wood but of superior quality. They are full to capacity so that the gift of money from Hong Kong University funds to build a new dormitory was extremely welcome. To show their gratitude, the university authorities asked me to dig the first piece of earth from the new site, and the president, who was absent during my visit, wrote a letter expressing his warmest thanks for the gift.

Lingnan is doing its best to remain independent as far as

possible
